Pike Place Market Celebrates it’s 100th Birthday this Friday!

This Friday, 100 years ago on August 17th, the Pike Place Market open it’s stalls to Seattle offering fresh local produce.  Of course, back in 1907 there weren’t any stalls yet since the produce was sold off the back of a few wagons and there were no fishmongers tossing fish over the heads of tourists! Pike Place Market June 3 2007 1 2

The Pike Place Market is the oldest continuously open farmers market in the US, and is set to celebrate its’ Centennial.  While the market has had its’ challenges over the decades, it has become one of the great places in Seattle to bring out-of-town guests, explore the unique shops and vendors’ craft-work, enjoy a meal, and watch for flying fish!  The Market is a colorful melange of brilliant flowers, jewel-like spills of fruits and vegetables, and a swirl of people pausing to examine the treasures in the vendors’ stalls.

To Celebrate the Markets’ Centennial , the market pigs were loosed on the city at the end of May for the “Pigs on Parade” which kicked off the celebration.  Pike Place Market Pig TripigasaurusThe pigs are now all over the city in all their artistic, piggy splendor so when you are driving around be on the look out for the flashy porkers!

There are lots of events scheduled to celebrate the Markets’ 100th birthday, and we are now just days away from wishing the Pike Place Market Happy Birthday! Happy 100th Birthday Celebration City Bus Invitation!

Deborah,

I couldn’t find any events for Friday, August 17th when I clicked the link. I’d rather go on Friday than the weekend. Can you tell me what and where there may be 100th Anniversary events on Friday?

Thanks.

Hi Ardell,

Sorry the links keep reverting back to the Markets’ home webpage. From either of my links on “Celebrate the Markets Centennial” or “events schedualed” you’ll need to follow three links to the list for Friday.

1) “Centennial Celebration”
2) “Centennial Events & Activities”
3 “The Pike Place Market’s Centennial Year is underway!
Join us for exciting events from August 10 - 17. See the complete Centennial Days list of events.”

It’s a long list for events for Fridays festivities beginning at 8AM! It should be fun I am going to be there sometime, but later in the afternoon, I am not an early bird!

Thanks Deborah. It’s a definite for Friday after seeing that list of events.

I’m thinking first stop is birthday cake. My daughter and grand daughter are getting into town late tonight and it will probably be the biggest birthday cake she’s ever seen.

I’m sure it will be a lot bigger than her last one

Hi Terri,

Come on up! It is fun to be driving around the city and spy a decorated pig! I think that Chicago may also have had decorated cows about their city as well, and that is cool about Portland’s cows!

I did not know about the St Paul dinos’, seeing those would be especally wonderful to me as I never got over my childhood fascination with dinosaurs!
