Recall notice on some GE Dishwashers August 29, 2007

If you’ve got a dishwasher manufactured by GE from Sept 1997 to Dec 2001 you may want to check out their website at www.geappliances.com/recall or call the recall hotline at 1-877-607-6395 (8am-8pm Mon-Sat Eastern Time) to see if yours is on the list of recalled products. Be sure to have your model and serial number with you when you call.

I got a notice the other day, and I’ve had a client receive one before too, asking me to check the model and serial number on my dishwasher to see if it might be one of those that has had problems.

“What is the problem they are concerned with”, you ask? Well, it seems that some liquid rinse-aid products build up a residue on the wires inside the door which can degrade the insulation of the wiring. This in turn has caused electrical shorts and fires in some of their products.

My client’s dishwasher ended up not being one of those on the recall list. However, mine was. The good news for me is that I don’t use any rinse-aid products so the recall won’t necessarily apply to me. It does put me on notice that I shouldn’t use the rinse-aid in the future though.

I’m wondering how people are supposed to notify purchasers of their homes about product recalls like this when they sell? Would it possibly be required on a disclosure form even if the specific dishwasher in your house never had a rinse-aid used in it? The notice from GE says that if you’re the owner of one of these dishwashers and you cannot attest to whether or not the former owner used rinse-aids, then you should repair or replace the dishwasher.

Anyone else have comments on how they would do it? For my own home, I’m thinking about taping a copy of the notice inside the cabinet under my kitchen sink and making a note that I don’t use rinse-aids and then perhaps keeping a copy with all of my other appliance manuals.

If you’ve got rentals with dishwashers you should be sure to check them as well as your own home’s dishwasher.

Hi Reba

The GE site on your link has a FAQ that says that they will either send someone out for FREE to fix it, or give you a gift certificate for $150 credit on a new GE dishwasher, or $300 credit on a GE Profile or Monogram one.

Since the recalled units are all 6 to 10 years old, I would probably get a new one. Regular GE dishwashers start at $249 at Home Depot, and the Profiles start at $629.

Yes, the notice does mention the repair or replacement option with the $150 credit as well. Thanks for pointing it out here though!

On 7-25-07 I talked to Johnathon (sp) and selected the profile replacement option. He said that I would receive information within 2/3 weeks and so I have received nothing. The past couple of days I have tried to contact the hotline but, it’s always to busy to take the calls. It’s in the callback mode.
What is the current situtation?

I don’t know the specifics of the GE recall and how they’re handling individual cases. You’ll need to speak with them directly. Good luck with getting it handled.

Hi William, you need to contact GE directly for the list. Use this website: http://www.geappliances.com/recall

If I am looking at this right I think my dishwasher is on the recall list. The model no. is GSD5130D01WW and the serial # is DZ753500B. Please confirm that this is a recall and how long to I have to act on replacing my dishwasher or geting it repaired?

9. Reba Haas - September 23, 2007

You’ll need to contact the folks at GE directly for these kinds of answers as I don’t work for or represent the company. I wrote the article only to highlight to the public that they need to verify the details if they have a GE dishwasher. You can use the link to the GE site to get their contact info. Thanks!

I sent my completed $300 rebate request to GE with the needed pertinent information re the new replacement dishwasher I purchased at Sears. It has been one month and I have not heard a word regarding my rebate.

I have called several times to get the info for the recall rebate and have yet to recieved the mailed literature to my home. I am now trying to get the rebate info through the internet and I am not getting
the info to get it done here either. I have a ID# 19924448 if that helps

I have a GE dishwasher Nautilus Serial number is MA757772B is this one on your recall list.

13. Reba Haas - October 2, 2007

Nancy, you’ll have to confirm it by looking at the link I posted above for the GE recall site. I don’t personally see an “MA” model noted but I don’t work for GE either. For anyone reading this post you really need to check the link above or contact GE directly.

Maurice, questions for GE go directly to them. Not a real estate blog site. Please use the links above in the post or the phone number to follow up on your request. Thanks.

Update:
I contacted the GE recall hotline again today (original contact was in Jult 2007) and told them that I had not received any correspondence from my original contact. It seems that the next step in the process after contacting the call center had failed to take any action like sending me the required paper work to process the rebate. So, here we go again to see if we can get through step two. Also, they gave me customer ID number (which they did not do before).
Maurice, it took me 10 months and a letter to the corporate office of Lowe’s to get a $65 rebate. Keep after them!

17. Reba Haas - October 9, 2007

good info, James, thanks for including it! I guess I’m lucky that I didn’t use any of the product (a rinse aid) that caused the reason for the recall.

18. Michael - October 23, 2007

Where is the link to input my customer id to get my refund? The lady I spoke to on the Hotline said it would be at my house in 5-7days, but if I wanted to get it quicker, I could go to the website and enter my customer id number. can you post the link? Thanks, Mike

19. Reba Haas - October 23, 2007

I’m not sure where that can be done on the site. Since I didn’t use the rinse aid in my dishwasher I didn’t make a claim. The folks on the hotline might be able to answer that better for you. I searched the site and didn’t see an obvious place to do what you mention in your post.

There is a company from Cewdartown DJ appliance that repaired the defected part on my dishwasher. Since the repair my dishwasher is not working properly. The soap dispensor does not close proper, and it does not shut off it beeps until you open the dooe and leave it open. We do not know how to contact this company to come back and fix their error. PLEASE HELP GE

After two failed calls to the HOTLINE (latest being 8-9-07) I went backto the web site to see what I could salvage. I went to geappliances.com and went to the recall item and walked through the process and it worked! I downloaded the rebate form and now I am ready to finalize the process by replacing the dishwasher.
One note of interest is that the HOTLINE did not work for me. After three calls and no responses I think that this service spreaks for itself.
Good luck, I am out!

I’m very pleased to hear that you had success with getting what you needed for the rebate/recall!

You may find your model on the website - I suggest you do this rather than call. This is not a GE website but a blog post alerting people to the fact that there was a recall. The website in the post above can get you to the information you seek.

26. James A. Applebee - November 29, 2007

If you go to geappliances.com (reference Nov.7th comments) and download the rebate form. The serial and model numbers for the recalls are on the second sheet.
I agree with the no call route. It doesn’t work.

Have a great day, Jim
